Shortly after the First World War, Ernest Burkhart, who served in France as a cook, comes to look for luck in Oklahoma, where there is a large reservation of Osage Indians. His uncle William Hale lives in those parts, who is nicknamed the King — he is a landowner, a cattle farmer, a friend of the Indians and a big man. The King convinces Ernest to woo Molly Kyle, a young woman from a wealthy Indian family.
